What do we do

Our eye bank team is responsible for creating awareness and encouraging people to donate.
We liaise with different hospitals in Nagpur and outside and encourage and support the eye donations through our counsellors.
When a patient dies, their relatives may inform us and our team is ready to move within 15 minutes, with all instrumentation and regulatory papers needed for a successful eye donation.
All eye donations are accepted only after due consent from the next of kin. The tissue is then transported back to the hospital and stored in special media to keep the cornea healthy for transplantation. The cornea is examined to assess its quality before being provided to a deserving patient. Corneas that cannot be used are then used for glaucoma surgeries or used for research purposes.

Registration as an organ donor

One pair of donated eyes can provide treatment for up to 10 different people. The cornea can be transplanted and each sclera can be used for up to 4 glaucoma surgeries. The tissue that cannot be used because of quality concerns, can also be used for research that may help in evolving sight saving treatments for the future.

You can register as a donor at the Suraj Eye Institute by filling a pledge form. However even with filling a pledge form, you may still donate your eyes, by giving your wishes to your next of kin, so that they may honour your wishes and call our team for making possible the eye donation.

The Suraj Eye Bank at the Suraj Eye Institute is registered with the Maharashtra Government as an eye bank authorised to collect the eyes from willing donors with consent from their families

What is an eye bank?

An eye bank obtains, medically evaluates and distributes eyes donated by caring individuals for use in corneal transplantation, research, and education. Eye banks are non-profit organizations

What is the cornea?

The cornea is the clear tissue covering the front of the eye. It is the main focusing element of the eye. Vision will be dramatically reduced if the cornea becomes cloudy from disease, injury or infection

What is a corneal transplant?

This is a surgical procedure which replaces a disc-shaped segment of an impaired cornea with a similarly shaped piece of a healthy donor cornea.

What is corneal blindness?

Corneal blindness is a disorder that results from the cornea becoming clouded, making a person blind. This condition can result from a variety of diseases, injury or infection

Why should eyes be donated?

The transplantation process depends upon the priceless gift of corneal donation from one human to the next. Donated human eyes and corneal tissue are used for research, education, and transplantation

What we do.

The team in this service treats cataract, a common eye condition, in which the lens becomes progressively opaque, resulting in blurred vision.

Cataract surgery is generally recommended when your cataract has progressed to the point that it is interfering with your daily activities and lifestyle. It is usually safe to delay surgery if you do not feel you have a problem with your vision, or don’t want to have an operation.

Modern cataract surgery is usually quick and can be performed using a local anaesthetic only. Most people are able to return to work the day after their operation. During surgery, your lens is usually replaced with a clear plastic lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). For most patients, the new lens is chosen to aim for focused distant vision after the operation. Many people still require glasses for fine focusing in the distance and it is usual for you to need reading glasses after your operation. There is a possibility of implanting a multifocal lens, which will enable you to focus at three focal points, thus covering near, computer and distance vision for you. A ‘toric’ lens that treats your astigmatism ( cylindrical power) and neutralises it is also available. Your treating doctor will advise you regarding the kind of lens you may need.
