Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

Efficacy and Duration

SLT achieves a 20–30% IOP reduction in approximately 60–70% of patients. The IOP response develops gradually over 4–6 weeks (unlike medications which act within hours). Studies show sustained IOP control at 5 years in approximately 50% of patients. If IOP rises again, SLT can be repeated on the untreated 180° or, after sufficient time, on previously treated areas. At Suraj Eye Institute, all SLT patients are enrolled in a structured monitoring programme with IOP measurements at 6-weekly, 3-monthly, then 6-monthly intervals.

✔ SLT at Suraj Eye Institute, Nagpur

Suraj Eye Institute offers SLT using state-of-the-art laser platforms, performed by glaucoma specialists trained in modern technique and power optimisation. We follow LiGHT trial principles, routinely offering SLT as a first-line alternative to drops for newly diagnosed open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Our comprehensive monitoring programme ensures early detection of IOP drift and timely retreatment. SLT is available as monotherapy, in combination with drops, or as an adjunct before surgical escalation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this condition treatable?
Yes. Glaucoma cannot be cured, but modern treatment — eye drops, laser, or surgery — can slow or halt progression when started early. The key is early detection through regular eye examinations.
How often should I be examined?
Most patients with glaucoma need a detailed eye exam every 3–6 months. The exact interval is decided by your treating consultant based on severity, target pressure, and disease stability.
Will I lose my vision?
Vision loss from glaucoma is preventable in most patients who adhere to treatment and follow-up. Progressive vision loss usually occurs only when disease is advanced or treatment is irregular.
