215 international publications. 24 years of ophthalmic science. Groundbreaking research in glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and inherited eye diseases β anchored in the population of Central India.
Our research is focused on the diseases that cause the most preventable blindness in Central India β tackling them from every angle: clinical, imaging, genetic, and AI-driven.
Structural and functional analysis of the optic nerve, intraocular pressure dynamics, visual field progression, and novel neuroprotective strategies. Our longitudinal glaucoma cohort is one of the largest in Central India.
π¬ Active StudiesPrevalence studies, grading validation, telemedicine screening models, and AI detection algorithms for diabetic eye disease in Vidarbha’s high-burden diabetic population.
π€ Industry PartnershipsOCT-based longitudinal tracking of AMD progression, genetic risk factors in the Central Indian population, and early biomarker detection for pre-symptomatic diagnosis.
π Biobank Sub-StudyRetinitis pigmentosa is a major focus at SEI, with a significant patient cohort from Central India’s tribal and consanguineous populations β a genetically underserved group in global research. Our work spans clinical phenotyping, ERG-based functional assessment, genetic analysis, and longitudinal tracking of disease progression in this unique demographic.
π¬ Genetic Sub-StudyRural eye care delivery through mobile outreach vehicles that transport patients from villages to SEI for cataract surgery, vision impairment epidemiology, and school-based eye health programmes serving the 23 million people of Vidarbha.
π Rural Outreach ProgrammePrevalence, progression patterns, and risk factors for myopia in the Central Indian population β including school-based screening studies, environmental and genetic correlates, and long-term outcomes in high myopia with potential sight-threatening complications.
π Prevalence StudiesNormative data on axial length, corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth, and lens thickness in the Central Indian population β critical for IOL calculations, refractive surgery planning, and establishing population-specific reference ranges for clinical practice.
π Normative DataThe first structured ophthalmic biorepository from Central India, linking clinical phenotyping, retinal imaging, and biological samples from a genetically and demographically distinct population.
Most major ophthalmic datasets come from South or North India. Central India β with its high rates of diabetes, hypertension, tribal consanguinity, and agricultural exposures β is a research blind spot. The CIOB changes that.
By linking SEI’s existing Cloud EMR, structured retinal imaging archive, and a prospectively collected biorepository, the CIOB creates a research foundation that will serve ophthalmic science for decades.
Ethics submission to IEC in progress. Guided by GCP principles and tiered broad consent framework.
Partner on the BiobankSuraj Eye Institute has contributed original research to peer-reviewed journals across ophthalmology, clinical science, and public health β making us one of the most research-active private eye hospitals in India.
Research spanning glaucoma, retinal imaging, cataract surgery outcomes, community eye health, low vision, paediatric ophthalmology, and AI-assisted diagnosis.
Dr. Vinay Nangia, Chairman & Director of SEI, brings training from three of the world’s foremost ophthalmology institutions β and has spent 24 years applying that expertise to the people of Central India.
Ophthalmic research training at one of the world’s premier medical institutions, shaping SEI’s evidence-based approach to clinical research.
Specialist training in advanced ophthalmology, contributing to SEI’s expertise in retinal imaging and surgical outcomes research.
India’s finest ophthalmology institution β the foundation of SEI’s commitment to combining clinical excellence with rigorous research.
National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers certification, ensuring research is embedded in a quality-assured clinical environment.
SEI’s research has fostered international collaborations across multiple continents. We welcome new partnerships with universities, NGOs, AI companies, and medical institutions worldwide.
Whether you are a researcher, an AI company, an NGO, or a pharmaceutical partner β SEI offers unparalleled access to a clinically rich, genetically distinct, and ethically governed ophthalmic research environment.
