Five Pillars of Ophthalmic Research

Our research is focused on the diseases that cause the most preventable blindness in Central India β€” tackling them from every angle: clinical, imaging, genetic, and AI-driven.

🟒

Glaucoma

Structural and functional analysis of the optic nerve, intraocular pressure dynamics, visual field progression, and novel neuroprotective strategies. Our longitudinal glaucoma cohort is one of the largest in Central India.

🩺

Diabetic Retinopathy

Prevalence studies, grading validation, telemedicine screening models, and AI detection algorithms for diabetic eye disease in Vidarbha’s high-burden diabetic population.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

OCT-based longitudinal tracking of AMD progression, genetic risk factors in the Central Indian population, and early biomarker detection for pre-symptomatic diagnosis.

Inherited Eye Diseases

Retinitis pigmentosa is a major focus at SEI, with a significant patient cohort from Central India’s tribal and consanguineous populations β€” a genetically underserved group in global research. Our work spans clinical phenotyping, ERG-based functional assessment, genetic analysis, and longitudinal tracking of disease progression in this unique demographic.

🌍

Community Ophthalmology

Rural eye care delivery through mobile outreach vehicles that transport patients from villages to SEI for cataract surgery, vision impairment epidemiology, and school-based eye health programmes serving the 23 million people of Vidarbha.

Myopia

Prevalence, progression patterns, and risk factors for myopia in the Central Indian population β€” including school-based screening studies, environmental and genetic correlates, and long-term outcomes in high myopia with potential sight-threatening complications.

πŸ“ˆ Prevalence Studies
πŸ“

Ocular Biometric Parameters

Normative data on axial length, corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth, and lens thickness in the Central Indian population β€” critical for IOL calculations, refractive surgery planning, and establishing population-specific reference ranges for clinical practice.

Central India Ophthalmology Biobank (CIOB)

🧬

CIOB β€” A National Research Asset

The first structured ophthalmic biorepository from Central India, linking clinical phenotyping, retinal imaging, and biological samples from a genetically and demographically distinct population.

TIER A Clinical data + retinal imaging β€” all consenting patients. Zero additional cost. Starts immediately.
TIER B Biological samples β€” blood, buccal swab, tear fluid. For research sub-study patients. Stored in cryogenic conditions.
TIER C Genetic analysis β€” DNA extraction for inherited disease research. With explicit tiered consent in Hindi, Marathi, and English.

Why This Biobank Is Different

Most major ophthalmic datasets come from South or North India. Central India β€” with its high rates of diabetes, hypertension, tribal consanguinity, and agricultural exposures β€” is a research blind spot. The CIOB changes that.

By linking SEI’s existing Cloud EMR, structured retinal imaging archive, and a prospectively collected biorepository, the CIOB creates a research foundation that will serve ophthalmic science for decades.
