Organisational and Scientific Achievements

Dr.  Vinay Nangia returned back to serve Central India  and committed himself to control of blindness activities through proactive measures for the community and towards research in public health.  He established the Suraj Eye Institute in Nagpur.  The Institute has its own team of social workers and has reached out to hundreds of villages  for holding camps and doing surgeries.  Ten years ago it brought  paediatric eye care in its ambit and has worked continuously to screen and examined children in schools and slums.  Both programs were developed in house and have been sustained over a long period of time.  Meanwhile the Institute through its many achievements was able to attract many partnerships which have all been immensely productive. Singularly successful have been the partnerships with  Rotary Netherlands, CORDAID, ORBIS and Heidelberg University. The Institute is now recognized for postgraduation in Ophthalmology and has a residency training proram which is recognized. In addition it provides for training  Fellowships in Glaucoma Cataract and Medical Retina. Dr. Vinay Nangia was formerly the secretary of Glaucoma Society of India and recently the  President of Glaucoma Society of India.  He is an expert for the Global Burden of Diseases 2013 and 2015, 2017 and 2019, collaborator with the Non Communicable Disease Risk Factors  consortium, Vision Loss Expert Group and the Asian Eye Epidemiology Group,   and was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of All India Ophthalmic Society for his contribution to glaucoma in 2014.

Community Eye Health Initiatives:

1. Nagpur Million Project.

The Nagpur Million Project is aimed at the 1.2 million people who live in the slums. That is nearly 45% of the total population living in the city of Nagpur which has a population of 2.5 million. There are 450 slums in Nagpur City. These people are deprived of healthcare and specially eye care. The project today holds a total of 12 clinics a month on a continuous basis, distributing free spectacles, diagnosing for cataract and other retinal diseases, examining the children in the anganwadis. Each year about 10,000 people are examined and treated free of cost.

2. The Sight Saver: This project is now a 6 year old project. Under this project the team of doctors and associates visit the district hospitals run by the government, and provide help in seeing patients and diagnosing serious sight threatening diseases and treating them. This project is run entirely by the Suraj Eye Institute The Institute during the past many years has provided services to Gondia and does 12 visits a month, to Bhandara, Gadchiroli Chandrapur and to Amravati.

3. Central India Retinopathy of Prematurity ( CIROP) Project. This is a special project aimed towards the premature babies in the Vidharbha region. Retinopathy of prematurity is a serious sight threatening condition, that can lead to blindness in babies born premature if not diagnosed and treated. Under this project, the team reaches out to the babies across Nagpur, Gondia, Bhandara, Amravati and Chandrapur in the Neonatal Intensive Care units run by the Government. This is a unique project and more than a 1000 premature babies have so far been screened since the start of the project in December 2012. All visits and screening to the government hospitals have been done free of cost for the patients.

4. Light to Lives. This is a project that involves providing cataract surgical services to the poor in the rural communities. This is the longest project and involved teams from the institute visiting villages in different districts including Nagpur over the last 15 years. This has resulted in sight restoration to thousands of patients, who were brought to the base hospital and given quality eye care treatment.
